The Replacement
The Replacement was completed within a four-week deadline. I created the outdoor area where the level begins. Working with such a large area was a challenge at first & required a few down-sizings, but I was eventually able to appropriately size it in a way that always presented the player with something to do about every ten seconds. It was important to me that they weren’t left with the feeling of aimlessly running around in an open space with nothing to do or interact with. I placed “collectables” throughout the area that provide hints as to what’s coming up in the near future (books with titles that explicitly reference an event occurring in the next area, for example) to provide the player with subtle hints instead of holding their hand or not providing hints at all. There are two meshes (one door, and one concrete slab) that I fractured in the editing properties to cause them to break into multiple chunks upon exploding, I believe this gave the effect a little extra “oomph”. Lastly, I created a cinematic using Kismet and camera actors once the player transitioned from my area to the next.
